Okinawan Budo Academy

Virginia Beach Karate & Kobudo

Continuing the legacy.

Okinawan Budo Academy of Virginia Beach ( OBA ) provides adults with a environment to destress, unwind and to reset through the practice of Okinawan Karate.  We realize many adults are overwhelmed with work and family and need a place to regroup.  We offer an environment that focuses on the individuals over all wellness and lastly on fighting.  Without a toned body, mind and spirit all the self-defense skills will be of little use.

Many schools offer "old school karate" that are organized in a way as to mirror military boot camps, if you are looking to reset and destress you will simply be leaving one stressful environment ( work ) for another.

Our goal is different, when you leave work and begin your training you focus on your needs, kata becomes a form of self-meditation and more importantly provides you something positive to focus your attention and future intentions.

About us

Okinawan Budo Academy is the traditional based branch of Cova Karate.  Cova Karate aims to provide martial arts instruction that focuses on developing the student into the Karate-ka they want to be, not what the schools wants them to be.  We believe that each student needs to develop their own unique expression of Karate while maintaining a small set of fundamental concepts and principals.

Sensei's David Colaizzi and Sean Schroeder where long time students of Kyoshi Noel Smith, both receiving their black belts from the Shorin-ryu Shorinkan Association under Shūgorō Nakazato and through  Okinanawan Budo Institue ( OBI ).  Sensei Sean spent many years learning from Kyoshi Noel Smith the fine art of teaching Karate while maintaining the essence of the Shorin-ryu.

For those interested in lineage and Kyoshi Noel Smith's instructor was Shūgorō Nakazato a direct student of Sensei Chosen Chibana.  Sensei Chosen Chibana was the progenitor of Kobayashi-te ( SHORIN-RYU ).  Sensie's David and Sean are but only 2 Generations away from Sensei Chibana, the source of our core system.

Sean and David embarked on divergent journeys, yet both have converged at the same destination. Sensei David followed the path laid out by Sensei Tadashi Yamashita, adhering closely to traditional teachings. Meanwhile, Sensei Sean charted a unique course, integrating movements, concepts, and principles from various martial arts systems. Additionally, he delved into the wellness aspects of Karate, embracing practices such as moving meditation, karate for physical conditioning, and holistic health.

It is within these wellness principles of Karate that we delve deeper into understanding the intricate connection between the body, mind, and spirit. Through exploration and application, we unlock the true essence of martial arts, fostering harmony and balance in all aspects of our being.
