Do You Need to Get in Shape Before Starting Karate?

Many adults believe they need to become stronger, more flexible, better coordinated, or more physically fit before beginning karate. This guide looks at why that often reverses the process and what an adult beginner should realistically expect.

Why We Created This Library

A short description of a martial arts school can only tell you so much. Terms such as fitness, confidence, self-defense, traditional karate, and personal development are used by many schools, but they do not necessarily explain how the training is actually taught.

These videos allow us to go deeper.

Sean Schroeder discusses the questions adults bring into the dojo, explains how CoVA Karate approaches traditional Okinawan karate, and explores the movement principles that students encounter during regular training.

The written guides accompanying selected videos provide additional context and make it easier to return to specific subjects without having to search through an entire video.

The Best Way to Understand the Training Is to Experience It

The videos and guides can explain how we approach karate, but they cannot replace actually stepping onto the floor and training.

The CoVA Karate two-week audit gives adults an opportunity to participate in regular classes, meet the instructors, train alongside current students, and decide whether the school is a good fit.
