In the same way that punk rock emerged as a rebellious alternative to the mainstream music scene, Coastal Virginia Karate (CoVa Karate) was born out of a need to break free from the rigidity and stagnation of traditional karate schools. Our dojo is more than just a place to learn martial arts; it’s a movement against the outdated structures that have stifled creativity and growth in the martial arts community.

Much like punk rock’s reaction to the pretentiousness of mainstream rock, CoVa Karate was founded as a response to the increasingly social club-like nature of many traditional karate associations. This has led to a narrow-minded approach to teaching, which often results in stagnation and even regression in students' skills and understanding.
